Extra Pounds = Extra Trouble
Bit of older news here, but still very valid, since I can personally attest to this.
Even before someone is officially labeled “obese,” excess weight can seriously up the risk of GERD. The referenced study shows those at the upper end of what is considered a normal weight range experience reflux at a fairly high rate.
As I mentioned in a previous post, I dropped a significant amount of weight when learning how to control my GERD. I feel that this was a major contributing factor in my own success, as there is a lot less pressure on my stomach when it’s not surrounded by so much fat.
Obesity is known to cause all sorts of health issues, both digestive and general (CNN recently reported on the higher incidence of stroke in obese people, and esophageal cancer is on the rise in the obese, for instance). So, if overweight people need another push in the right direction to start that diet and exercise routine, here it is!
