New, Easier Way to Diagnose Crohn’s Disease!
Here’s some welcome news from the medical community! The ability to diagnose Crohn’s Disease now comes in easy-to-swallow pill form.
Traditionally, colonoscopy has been one of the preferred methods of identifying Crohn’s Disease in patients. I want to know: who prefers that particular method for anything? All kidding aside, it is a welcome relief to learn that diagnosis can now be made via Capsule Endoscopy.
Capsule Endoscopy is a fancy term for a painless procedure where the patient simply swallows a pill containing a miniature video camera. The pill travels through your digestive tract, taking one picture every half-second. It harmlessly passes through, but can give your doctor much-needed insight into the internal workings of your intestines.
There are many benefits to this method. Besides being painless, there’s no sedation involved. That means you should be able to drive yourself to and from your doctor. Also, since there’s no colonoscopy, the awful preparation involved with that (complete colon-cleansing, AKA a system flush) can be skipped. Finally, you won’t leave your doctor’s office feeling quite so violated. Again, kidding about that last one!
It is important to note that this method has experienced some early success, but definitely be prepared to work with your doctor if you are experiencing Crohn’s Disease symptoms and this test turns out to be inconclusive. As with many disorders, this can be tough to diagnose, and it’s important to not get discouraged. Keep your chin up!
