Omega 3 Doesn’t Prevent Crohn’s Disease
There’s some discouraging news for people living with Crohn’s Disease: Omega 3 fatty acids have been shown to not prevent a relapse in symptoms.
Omega 3 fatty acids are great for you, no doubt about it. They’ve never shown adverse health effects in studies and have been linked with lower rates of heart disease. Unfortunately, two new studies have shown that they do little, if anything, to ease the suffering caused by Crohn’s.
Researchers may continue to attempt different dosing levels, as the published studies only show that high levels of Omega 3 show no changes. It is possible that a lower level still will help, though. To back up this theory, some scientists have pointed out that some Crohn’s drugs are effective only until a certain point; the benefits then start to shrink as dosages increase.
Don’t let this get you down, however. More research is being done every day, and Omega 3 fatty acids still belong in your diet to maintain cardiovascular health, so keep eating fish and flax seed (or the oil, if the seeds themselves bother your stomach)!
