Protect Your Child From Rotavirus!

Good news for parents and parents-to-be everywhere: there’s now a new vaccine to prevent your child from experiencing the horrid vomiting and diarrhea associated with rotavirus.

Over 2.7 million children are stricken with rotavirus each year. Without vaccination, the chances are very, very high that an child will get infected by age 5. Annually, over 55,000 require hospitalization. Between 20-60 infected children have died due to related complications.

The virus causes symptoms of gastroenteritis. This is similar to the “dumping” syndrome sometimes experienced by gastric-bypass patients, where everything in the GI tract quickly passed out via the nearest exit. To a lesser extent, this is also experienced by people who suffer from Crohn’s Disease and Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

In clinical trials, the vaccine sometimes caused relatively mild side effects. It did gain FDA approval though, and Glaxo-Smithkline (GSK), the maker of the drug, is going to continue researching those side effects.

So talk to your family doctor to determine if the benefits to your child would outweigh the risks. While this sounds very promising, I would never recommend blindly choosing to get or not to get a vaccine, so research this with a medical professional!
