GERD (Acid Reflux)

Quick-jump to:

Definition

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a disease where the acids and digestive juices of the stomach (acid, pepsin and bile) abnormally flows backwards, up the esophagus.

This is often a chronic and life-long condition. Sometimes referred to as reflux, the backwards flow of stomach juice itself is not a rare or unusual condition. Studies have been conducted that show people who do not suffer from GERD have as much reflux as those diagnosed with GERD. The difference is the percentage of acid in the digestive juices.

Symptoms

GERD is best defined as an uncomfortable burning feeling behind the breastbone.

  • Persistent heartburn
  • Burning in chest
  • Regurgitation (stomach juice in the mouth)
  • Nausea
  • Ulcers and strictures
  • Cough
  • Asthma
  • Inflammation of the throat, larynx and lungs
  • Fluid in the sinuses and ears

Diagnosis

The danger of GERD is that the acid can damage the esophagus. A doctor should take a detailed medical history. Most common tests include those that study the esophagus and upper digestive tract.

Tests include:

  • Endoscopy - This test involves inserting a small, flexible camera down the esophagus to look for damage.
  • Gastrointestinal testing – This test involves an exam of the upper portion of the patient’s digestive system.
  • There are other tests that can be conducted to study these main areas where symptoms and damage occur including biopsies of sections of the digestive system and x-rays.

Treatment

Treatment of GERD often includes lifestyle and diet changes and medication depending on the severity of the condition. People diagnosed with GERD should refrain from:

  • Smoking
  • Drinking
  • Overeating
  • Laying down or reclining after meals

GERD patients should be aware of the acid content of the foods they eat and refrain from eating them. Reactions will vary from person to person and will depend on the severity of the GERD. Some common culprits are:

  • Tomato sauces
  • Dairy-based foods
  • Coffee
  • Fried food
